Tips for Visiting Summit County on a Budget (Yes, It’s Possible!)
Summit County, Colorado, is a dream destination—world-class skiing, stunning mountain views, and a charming small-town vibe. But let’s be honest: it can also be expensive. Between lift tickets that make your wallet cry and meals that cost more than your mortgage, it might feel like a trip here is only for those with deep pockets.
But fear not! With a little insider knowledge (and maybe a few snacks stuffed in your ski jacket), you can have an epic mountain adventure without maxing out your credit card.
1. Travel Smart: Because Gas is Basically Liquid Gold
Getting to Summit County can be half the battle, especially in the winter when rental car prices go through the roof. Instead, try:
- Take the Bustang from Denver to Frisco for way less than a tank of gas. Once you’re here, the Summit Stage is free. Yes, you read that right. A ski town with free public transportation—it’s basically a unicorn.
- Carpool or rideshare. If you’re traveling with friends, splitting a shuttle like Epic Mountain Express instead of renting a car can save money and stress.
2. Find a Place to Sleep Without Selling a Kidney
- Book an Airbnb or VRBO outside of Breckenridge. Dillon, Frisco, and Silverthorne are just a short drive away but much more affordable.
- If visiting in summer, camping at places like Heaton Bay Campground can give you million-dollar views for pocket change.
- The Breck Inn and The Pad in Silverthorne offer budget-friendly accommodations without the luxury resort price tag.
3. Hit the Slopes Without Going Broke
Lift tickets these days cost more than my first car, but there are ways to save:
- Buy lift tickets in advance. Epic Pass holders get discounts, and resorts usually offer lower prices online than at the window.
- Ski half-days or at night. Keystone offers night skiing for a cheaper option, and many resorts sell discounted afternoon tickets for those who don’t function before noon.
- Check out smaller resorts like Arapahoe Basin or Loveland Ski Area, which offer great skiing without the sticker shock.
4. Eat Well Without Going on a Ramen Diet
Eating out in a ski town can be expensive, but you don’t have to drop a small fortune on every meal.
- Take advantage of happy hours at restaurants like Mi Casa in Breckenridge or Dillon Dam Brewery, which offer great après-ski deals.
- Pick up groceries from City Market (Kroger) or Whole Foods in Frisco and make your own breakfasts and lunches.
- Try local food trucks and casual spots like La Perla in Silverthorne for affordable and delicious Mexican food, or grab a crepe from Crepes A La Cart in Breckenridge.
5. Enjoy Free (or Almost-Free) Fun
Some of the best experiences in Summit County don’t cost a thing.
- Take in the mountain views on hiking trails like Sapphire Point Overlook, an easy and stunning option. For those who like a challenge, Quandary Peak offers a serious workout and unbeatable scenery.
- Sledding at Carter Park in Breckenridge is free if you bring your own sled. Maggie Pond offers free ice skating for those who have their own skates.
- Check out free events like farmers' markets, concerts, and festivals. The Frisco Adventure Park often has low-cost or free activities.
- Walk along Dillon Reservoir’s scenic shoreline or rent a paddleboard for a budget-friendly summer activity.
6. Shop Smart: Because No One Needs a $100 Souvenir Mug
- Rent gear off-mountain. Shops like Pioneer Sports in Frisco and Mountain Sports Outlet in Silverthorne offer lower prices than resort rental shops.
- The Silverthorne Outlets have discounted gear from The North Face, Patagonia, and Columbia.
- Instead of overpriced souvenir shops, check out local thrift stores like Breckenridge Thrift & Treasure for unique finds at reasonable prices.
7. Use Discount Apps & Secret Savings
- Groupon and other deal sites sometimes offer discounts on ski rentals, restaurants, and activities.
- If you have an Epic Pass, check for food and rental discounts at participating resorts.
- Many local museums, like the Barney Ford House Museum in Breckenridge, have free admission days.
