Say goodbye to summer pest problems and hello to a home that stays clean, calm, and bug-free all season long. Whether you’re enjoying the mountain air of Breckenridge or prepping your home to sell, these DIY pest-proofing tips are natural, effective, and simple to implement. As the only AI-Certified Real Estate Agent in Summit County, I bring innovative strategies and smart solutions to every part of your homeownership journey. Let’s keep the bugs out and the good vibes in.

Summer in the mountains should be about patio lounging, cool drinks, and fresh alpine air—not dodging mosquitoes or chasing ants off your countertops. But as soon as the weather warms up, all the creepy crawlers seem to come out in full force.

The good news? You don’t need to douse your house in chemicals or call an exterminator. These simple, practical DIY tips will help you keep pests out and your summer peaceful.

Step One: Lock Them Out

Pests can sneak in through the tiniest cracks and gaps. Take a few minutes to inspect the outside of your home—windows, doors, vents, pipes, and foundation lines. Seal any openings with caulk or weatherstripping. Make sure window screens are snug and free of tears. This basic step goes a long way toward keeping bugs outside where they belong.

Step Two: Starve Them Out

A dirty kitchen is a pest magnet. Ants, fruit flies, and roaches are all about those crumbs and spills. Make it a habit to wipe down counters, sweep floors, clean up right after meals, and take the trash out regularly. Store food in sealed containers and rinse out recyclables. And don’t forget to clean up after pets—food bowls can attract unwanted visitors, too.

Step Three: Eliminate Standing Water

Mosquitoes breed in still water, and they don’t need much. Dump water from flowerpot trays, birdbaths, toys, buckets, and anything else that might be collecting rain. If you have a fountain or pond, make sure the water is moving to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

Step Four: Clean Up the Yard

Overgrown grass, leaf piles, and stacked firewood create ideal hiding spots for ticks, rodents, spiders, and more. Keep your lawn trimmed, prune bushes, and rake regularly. Firewood should be stacked off the ground and stored at least 20 feet away from your home. A tidy yard makes your home less inviting to pests.

Step Five: Use Natural Repellents

You don’t have to use harsh chemicals to keep bugs away. Peppermint oil, vinegar, coffee grounds, and even cinnamon are great natural deterrents. Try mixing a few drops of essential oil with water and spraying it around doorways and windows. These methods are safe for kids and pets and keep your home smelling fresh.

Step Six: Add a Barrier

If pests have been a problem in the past, consider applying a home-safe perimeter spray or calling in a pro for a one-time seasonal treatment. This creates a protective barrier that helps prevent bugs from even reaching your home in the first place.

Step Seven: Don’t Forget Hidden Areas

Garages, basements, crawlspaces, and under-sink cabinets are easy to overlook but often become bug hotspots. Vacuum these areas regularly and consider adding moisture absorbers where needed. Keeping these zones clean and dry helps prevent infestations before they start.

Make This Summer Yours—Not Theirs

A peaceful, pest-free home isn’t hard to achieve—it just takes a little routine maintenance and awareness. These quick, natural steps help keep the bugs out and the good times rolling all summer long.
